Just a little reflection on how much good neighbors mean! In Corpus Christi, we had a set of wonderful neighbors, Larry and Edith. They were always so nice and welcoming and made us sad at how short a time we were there. Here in Little Rock, our neighbors are friendly enough, but not the kind we would be able to depend on by any means. With the short time I was visiting Cheyenne, I was able to get to know one of our neighbors, Melinda, who is so nice! She checks on the house frequently, she forwards our mail to us every few weeks, and gives me updates. Above and beyond, right? Well, thankfully so, as we had a bit of a crisis today with the house in Cheyenne, and it is made even worse by the fact that we are not there. We hate this feeling of helplessness. Melinda called and said that this past Friday, she noticed water accumulating in one of the window wells from the sprinkler system that we just had installed. She said she had called the landscaper and talked to him, having him come over and look at it. She scooped the water out of the well with a bucket, he came over and looked at it, they thought it was taken care of, and she wouldn't have called us about it at all. But, it was happening again, despite the "fix," and she thought it best to call me.
I called the landscaper and couldn't get ahold of him. Great.
Finally this morning I called and spoke to him, and he said he would go back over and look at it, but that he thought it was just a problem with the water flow away from our house. Meaning that we'd probably have to fork over money to have a special pump installed in the well to rid of the water that would no doubt continue to accumulate.
Again, great.
He did go over again later in the day and said he discovered a small leak in the pipes that he thought was causing it, and they would be over first thing tomorrow morning to fix it. Unfortunately, more water had leaked today, and some was now in the basement.
GRRRRRR!
Fortunately, our friends Donnie and Tabitha happened to swing by the house to check on it, and they were there when all this was going on. They helped Melinda clean up the water (there wasn't too much, thankfully), set up a few fans, and move a few of our belongings away from the basement walls in question.
This drama isn't quite over, as the fix still needs to take place, but the next few days will tell us whether it worked. We are hating doing all this long-distance, but having a great neighbor and great friends is making it possible. Thanks guys!
Happy New Year!
